Channa harcourtbutleri (Annandale, 1918) |
Channa harcourtbutleri is an endemic species of snakehead from Lake Inlé in Myanmar. It is one of the smallest species of snakehead and has a length of 20 cm. Among aquarists it belongs to the group of Dwarf snakeheads, but no import for aquarists is known. The species was considered for a long time to be a junior synonym for Channa gachua. In fact, both species closely resemble each other. The article on its revalidation only mentions 3 discriminating features like the missing ocellus in the dorsal fin of Channa harcourtbutleri during its juvenile state. It is very possibly a mouthbrooder and eats a wide range of foods including insects, small fish but no animals like frogs.
