Champmathieu

Champmathieu is a vagabond in the Victor Hugo novel Les Miserables who is mistakenly accused of being the convict Jean Valjean and taken for trial in the Arras superior court after supposedly stealing a fruit-laden bough from an apple tree, and being positively identified by Javert and three other convicts as Jean Valjean, who was being hunted for an accidental highway robbery of young chimney sweep Petit-Gervais, and for stealing silver and candlesticks from bishop of Digne, Monsegnieur Myriel.
