Champlain Centre South

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Champlain Centre South was an enclosed shopping mall located in Plattsburgh, New York off Route 87 on Route 3. The mall was owned by The Pyramid Companies, and was originally named Pyramid Mall at Plattsburgh.

Champlain Centre South opened in 1975, with Kmart, Montgomery Ward, JCPenney, and about 50 other stores including Payless ShoeSource, Fay's Drugs, Thom McAn, Record Town, a 31,000 square foot Price Chopper, and others. Across the street a new mall, Champlain Centre North, opened in 1987 and several tenants moved from the South to the North mall, including JCPenney. Champlain Centre South continued to lose tenants and became a dead mall not long afterwards.

Montgomery Ward closed in 1997 and many more smaller stores followed and the mall was torn down in 2000/2001 (K-mart remained, but the exterior was remodeled). The space was rebuilt into a new, updated outdoor mall, with Lowe's Home Improvement, a 68,000 square foot Price Chopper, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Petco opening between 2001 and 2004. Applebee's was built in a new outparcel and Friendly's remained.
