[edit] History

Champlain Centre North opened in 1987, featuring Hills, JCPenney, Sears, Service Merchandise, and Steinbach for anchors. The mall opened next door to an older mall, Champlain Centre South, stealing that mall's JCPenney store; as a result, the South mall quickly approached dead mall status and was torn down in 2000.

Toys "R" Us opened at the mall in 1997; this store was much smaller than a regular Toys "R" Us. Service Merchandise and Steinbach both departed in 1999; also in 1999, the mall's Hills store was converted to Ames as the former chain was bought out.

Despite the loss of two anchors, the mall continued to function. Toys "R" Us closed in 2002 and became Borders in the same year, just as Ames closed. In 2003, Dick's Sporting Goods would fill the old Steinbach, and in 2004, Gander Mountain opened in the former Service Merchandise. 2005 saw the addition of Best Buy Best Buy was built in a new structure west of the mall adjacent to the former Ames store. It eliminated the north entrance to the mall as Toys R Us eliminated the similar south entrance. The former Ames is still vacant; however, there are unconfirmed rumours that Target may demolish the former Ames and build a store there as there are plans for a 126,000 square foot store there. J.C.Penney wants to expand from 50,000 square feet to 100,000 square feet
