[edit] Overview

The duo recorded the album by sending beats and vocals back and forth between their respective hometowns, Detroit (J Dilla) and Los Angeles (Madlib). The two met only once before or during this time, while Madlib was recording in Detroit for J Dilla's album on MCA Records; a record that was never released. Champion Sound features the pair rapping over each other's compositions. J Dilla's productions tend to be subtle, while Madlib's are generally more abrasive, resulting in a contrasting tone throughout the album.

Following J Dilla's move from Detroit to Los Angeles in 2004, they appeared together on tour in Spring 2004 in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Toronto. Madlib debuted a yet-unreleased Jaylib song on a BBC radio show on May 1, 2005 titled "Take It Back aka The Unofficial" (produced by J Dilla, vocal by Madlib). The track is currently a part of Adult Swim and Stones Throw's Chrome Children. It is unknown what other material the duo recorded together as Jaylib.

Their song "The Red" was featured in Tony Hawk's Project 8.

Champion Sound will be reissued on May 22, 2007 with b-sides, remixes, instrumentals, and even a couple previously unpublished photos.

[edit] Other Uses

"Champion Sound" is also the name of an old skool jungle track by Q Project. The Alliance remix of this tune was released in 1993 and was a hit. It is still one of the anthems of the 90's era. It was remixed by Bad Company in 2000 and was again very popular. It can be heard at drum n bass arena site.
