Champagne Stakes (United Kingdom)

The Champagne Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in the United Kingdom for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and geldings. It is run over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres) at Doncaster Racecourse during the St Leger meeting in September. The race was first run in 1823.
Aside from some well known names in the winners list, many notable horses have been beaten in the Champagne Stakes. Recently these include Rock of Gibraltar (second in 2001) and Haafhd (third in 2003). Further back, Sceptre (1901), Blenheim II (1929) and Rheingold (1971) all finished placed.
