Chaminade College School

Chaminade College School is an all-boys Catholic secondary school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Founded in 1964 by the Archdiocese of Toronto (headed by Ricardo Pinto), it opened its doors in September, 1965. Initially under the control of the Society of Mary, the school was named for the Society's founder, Father William Joseph Chaminade.

In 1967, Chaminade began a partnership with the Toronto Catholic District School Board. In this partnership, the Board conducted the first two years of secondary school, and the Archdiocese conducted the remaining years. In September 1972, the Irish Christian Brothers took over administration of the school, until their departure in June, 1988. The school is currently fully operated by the Metropolitan Separate School Board.

The school's motto is "Fortes in fide", and the school rally, "C! C! S!", became famous in 1992 by then-Vice Principal Mr. Ron O'Toole's irregular and varying chanting syncopation at school functions and gatherings to garner enthusiasm.

[edit] Chaminade Art Program

The study of art through the centuries gives students an understanding of the works and their styles.^{[citation needed]} Students move from drawing cityscapes in their first year of study to oil paintings in their fourth year. All the students' work is also put on display in their spring art show. The show attracts art lovers from all around the world.^{[citation needed]} The art studio comes equipped with its own darkroom, where students learn the processing of black and white film.

[edit] Chaminade Concert Band

The Chaminade Concert Band is said to be one of the finest bands in all of the city of Toronto.^{[citation needed]} Throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s, under band conductor Livio Leonardelli, the band has travelled the world playing in venues throughout Italy, Switzerland, and the United States. By the midway point of the 2005-2006 school year, the band had about 75 members. This is quite notable, as Chaminade is a smaller school with only 600-750 students, and many other bands from schools which have larger populations are much smaller.^{[citation needed]} The band has no limits or requirements in terms of age or grade, and as such has a large variety of students involved, with students from grade 9 to 12, with varying academic levels.

The band is led by the lone music teacher at Chaminade College School, Mr. Voros, who is a bass trombone player in several professional bands.^{[citation needed]} In 2003, the Chaminade Concert Band produced their own CD entitled The Big Picture.

There is also a Chaminade Junior Band, which is made up of students from Grades 9-10. This band is somewhat smaller, with about 50 members, and is generally at a lower level of performance ability than the Concert Band,^{[citation needed]} despite the fact that several junior members of the Concert Band are also a part of the Junior Band.

The school newspaper is the Gryphon Gazette.

The MST program, which stands for Math, Science, Technology, is a program for students who wish to further their high school education beyond what is provided for in the standard academic courses by experiencing unique trips and activities. Although it is not mentioned in the initials of MST, English is also a subject which is involved in the MST program.
