Chaincase

A chaincase or chain guard is a guard which fits around a chain to protect the chain from dirt and other environmental hazards, and to protect operators from dirt and danger of trapping.

Chaincases are common on industrial machinery, early lawn mowers, and particularly on commuter bicycles, most notably in Germany and the Netherlands although historically many British roadsters were also fitted with chaincases.
