Chahta Tamaha, Indian Territory

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chahta Tamaha (Choctaw Town) located in present-day McCurtain County, Oklahoma, grew up around the Armstrong Academy in the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory.

Chahta Tamaha served as the early capitol of the Choctaw Nation. The Armstrong Academy was the capitol building during the Civil War. The United Nations of Indian Territory delegates (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek (Muskogee), Choctaw, Seminole, and Caddo) met here with the Confederacy to plan war strategy.

Nothing remains of the town but rubble from the Armstrong Academy.
