CFNA HQ Whitehorse

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Canadian Forces Northern Area Headquarters (CFNA HQ) Whitehorse is a detachment of the Canadian Forces, based approximately 24km south of Whitehorse, Yukon territory.

Canadian Forces have operated in the area since the days of the famous volunteer Yukon Field Force, established in 1898, to help the Northwest Mounted Police maintain law and order during the Gold Rush. The creation of the Alaska Highway through the region in 1942 lead Whitehorse to become an important center for communication and transportation within Yukon territory. It wasn't until 1970 that a formal Northern Area Detachment was formed, with a base in Whitehorse and another in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

The base is frequently used for cadet training in the summer months.
