[edit] Biography
Cesar received his black belt from Carlos "Carlinhos" Gracie, Jr., the son of Carlos Gracie who along with brother Helio Gracie are the co-founders of "Gracie Jiu Jitsu" later to be called Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Cesar's students include black belt David Terrell, brown belts Nick Diaz, Nate Diaz, Jake Shields, and Gil Castillo, as well as purple belt sensation Gilbert Melendez.
Cesar Gracie is also well known for his DVD instructional series. It is considered by some as one of the best examples of video instruction in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu skills even more than those made by celebrated Gracie family members Renzo and Royler. Cesar's instructionals are widely acclaimed due to the robustness of grappling techniques, submission skills, and street fighting counters and really good transitional submission techniques in his Jiu-Jitsu DVDs, not to mention Cesar's clearer accent and modern teaching style.
[edit] Controversy
There is a bit of controversy surrounding Cesar though. First are the claims that he is not a "real" Gracie family member. His mother was born into the Gracie family and his father was not, but he uses the gracie name in order to reap the benefits associated with them. While this is not discussed publicly, one famous member of the family who is an active fighter went on record shortly after his fight with Frank Shamrock, in which Cesar was knocked out in a quick 21 seconds, and said "Now you see what the difference is between real Gracies and fake ones".
Another controversial topic is Cesar's MMA record. Prior to the fight with Frank Shamrock, Cesar claimed to be 14-0 in MMA matches. Many fans and officials were puzzled by this claim since minimal research turns up no record of these fights. When questioned on this Cesar claimed they took place in Brazil many years ago and were not recorded or filmed. Also no opponent names could be recalled or given for verification. This was further investigated by the San Jose Mercury newspaper:

"Cesar Gracie, who hails from the sport's most famous family, posed a special problem. Inactive for more than 15 years, he had never fought in the United States and his record could not be substantiated. The best the commission could come up with was a pair of letters from federations in Brazil that vouched for Gracie's 14-0 mark."
[edit] Fight with Frank Shamrock
The only verified fight on Cesar's record is his fight with Frank Shamrock which took place march 10th, 2006 at the Strikeforce event in San Jose, CA. This match was literally years in the making due to much trash talk and challenging from both men. Both accused the other of being scared, stalling the matchup and not really wanting to fight. After many false starts and failed matchups, it finally happened.
Things played out quickly when Gracie chose to stand up and trade punches with Shamrock instead of taking him to the ground where he is proficient in grappling. Shamrock dodged a couple of Gracie's strikes and then quickly knocked out Gracie with a hard looping righ hand and followed him to the ground which a couple more.
