Da Graça was a contestant for Miss Hong Kong 2002 but only achieved third-runner up. This decision created controversy among her fans in Hong Kong who felt that she deserved a higher placement. It was felt that Cerina Filomena da Graça's many accomplishments deserved a place in the top three of the competition.

Da Graça was widely seen as the favourite to win the Miss Hong Kong 2002 crown. Da Graça had won the Miss Photogenic prize at the Semi-Finals which was usually a good indicator on the final winner. Asked if she was disappointed about not winning any of the major prizes, Da Graça responded: "No, this was a very good life experience for me."

Some feel that the main reason to account for this result is that the TVB company had selected her for a prestigious acting position and wanted her to work hard for TVB. Da Graça didn't know about this arrangement and after she failed to get into the top three, she gained the valuable chance to perform in several television series in Hong Kong. She is still regarded by many to be a good actress with great potential to participate in Hong Kong or international film. Although she lost the contest but she didn't feel despair and she thought it's a valuable experience to work as an actor.

Da Graça had also been considered to star as the Princess during the September 2005 opening of the Hong Kong Disneyland theme park when the park opened, but to the public's surprise the role went to Joyce Cheng instead.

Currently, Da Graça is a first year law student (University of Arizona) in the United States. She is also a member of Mensa. She grew up in the United States.
