Century High School (Oregon)

Century High School is located in Hillsboro, Oregon. It was built in 1997 with the school colors of black, teal, and silver. Century High School's principal is Ted Zehr. The school's mascot is the jaguar, frequently depicted as a panther to coincide with school colors. The school is unique in the district for utilizing block scheduling.

The school competes in the new 5A Northwest Oregon Conference along with other high schools from the Hillsboro School District. The league is new as of the six-class revamp from the Oregon School Activities Association.

In the 2005-2006 school year, the drama department swept Regionals and went to the State Showcase with their Group Musical performance, and the band is also made it to State.

There are several CAM (or Certificate of Advanced Mastery) courses available at Century. There are Health Services, Digital Technology, PAC (people and the community), Business, and FAME (Fine Arts). Students choose their CAM their junior year and start taking the prerequisites for the classes. The CAM classes give students time to work on their senior project, which must be completed before they can graduate.

The CIM is an acknowledgement that a student has met rigorous standards by acquiring skills in several academic areas.

While being outnumbered in student population, some of Century High School Athletics have been able to surpass such obstacles and make it to success. Century's Jagz Dance Team has made it to the Top 4 in state for the past 4 years.

Under the leadership of then coach Rian Petrick, the Jaguar baseball team reached the state playoffs in 2001 and 2002. In 2002, the team made it to the fourth round of the playoffs, before being defeated by Oregon City by a 7-2 margin. In that game, Oregon City's Jonah Nickerson pitched. Nickerson would go on to pitch for the Oregon State Beavers during their 2006 College World Series championship run. In that 2002 season, the team was ranked #1 in OSAA coaches polls.

Century High School basketball hopes to improve its players as early as girls and boys in 6th grade. Century as well as many other schools came up with a youth basketball program where the players will still play for their respective high schools. This program was set up to improve youth basketball skills and start the High Schools ideas early in the kids.


Most importantly, the Century high varsity basketball team is currently ranked first in the leauge and fourth in state taking a spot as Co-Champions of the 5A Northwest Oregon Confrence. The team advanced to the playoffs but lost in the opening round to Jefferson High School.

Century softball has had similar success, reaching the playoffs in 2000 and 2004. In 2000, the team reached the quarterfinals, before being defeated by Clackamas, 4-0.

Century wrestling boasts several former state champions in different weight classes, and has consistently finished in the top 20 in team scores for the state. The team finished 12th in its 2003 season. This year the wrestlers are going to Hawaii.

Century's Track and Field team is lead by head coach Tony Rinck. (The 2007 Season)>> With the loss of last year's super star runners Jerhomee Murray, Caleb Ditzel, and Brycen French the program will be relying very heavily on runners Tony Pathamavong, John Fross, and Cody Grahm. The jumpers, with their loss the Tripple Jump record holder Tyler Reisenaur, will be relying on predominately on Justin Reid. Jordan Seitz, a Sophomore, will lead the pack in shot put and discuss.

[edit] Speech and debate

Century's 2006-07 speech and debate team is directed by coaches June Gerst and Katie Waker. Co-captains Jessica Pingleton and Nathan Hillbron made it as alternates to Nationals to be held in Wichita, Kansas. The Cross-examination team, Joshua Smeltzer and Joe Worthey, took 1st place and speaker awards throughout the season. Alexis Chosvig is making a name for herself in prose, oratory, and serious interpretation (individual events).

The arts department at Century is thriving with the bands, group musical, choir and JagTv journalsim being among the many programs.

The marching band did well this year with their show 'En Fuego.' At the Northwest Marching Band Preview, Century competed in exhibition where they would have won 4th place. In the Spokane championship hosted by the Spokane Thunder, they placed 2nd to Mead High School and managed to achieve the 'High Percussion' caption award. The tied for fourth place at the University of Oregon Festival of Bands. And at the Northwest Marching band Circit championships they placed fourth. In 2003-2004 "Blue Note" the band placed 1st in there AA class with every caption, however this was because no one else showed for finals making it a win by "forfeit", If you will.

The drum majors are: Cooper Ottum, Kelsey Prentice, and Jake McGrew.

The section leaders are: Casey Evenhus for saxophones, Emily Meissen for flutes, Keely Thompson for Clarinets, Josh Cabrera for trombones, Chuck Nickles for low brass, Brian Waldron for trumpets, Eli Taylor for pit percussion, and Ryan Goodyear is the Drum Captain.

The marching band marches within many parades. The 4th of July Parade in Hillsboro, the Macy's holiday parade in downtown Portland, the Starlight Parade in Portland and the Grand Floral Parade in Portland. The Band also has marched in the Prince Kuhio Day Parade in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Century High School Winter Drumline has gone to the WGI World Championships twice in the past years, placing 5th and 17th. Previous shows have been entitled "Big Bang: Beginning of Time" and "In a Cool Mood" and "Mambo Kings". The show for the 2005-2006 school year is entitled "Percussion 101", depicting a typical day in a percussion class. The music was written by David Reeves. For the 2006/2007 winter drums season, the show is 'Slight of Hand' featuring the music of Dream Theater this includes "Root of all Evil," "Dance of Eternity," "Wait for Sleep," and "6 o'clock." the music is arranged by Dave Reeves. The illusions theme features "magic" tricks that the students are learning to do.

Varsity Winterguard's 2005-2006 show is entitled "Memories" and features the song "Photograph" by Nickelback. It is a tribute to the nine seniors in the group. Varsity took 2nd place at Westview in the open division. At Championships at Hockinson High School (Brush Prairie, Washington), the guard took 3rd place with a score of 73.7. This year, the Varisty guard's show is entitled "The show must go on:Celebrating Freddy" featuring the song the show must go on performed by the band Queen. It is a Tribute to Freddie Mercury (a member of Queen) who died of AIDS.The captains for the elite century guard are seniors Sara Loyd, Cambrai Loftus, and Mellisa Rose.

Junior Varsity (JV) Winterguard's show is entitled "Touched by the Sun" and features the music of Carly Simon. They won 2nd place in their division at Westview. This year the show is entitled "Colors."Captain is Nick Garcia.

On March 17th through March 28th, the band and guard went on the 2006 Hawaii tour. The Symphonic Band went to a clinic at the University of Hawaii. The group went on the Polynesian Cultural Center at which the drumline performed. The marching band performed its show at the USS Missouri after going to the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. The group marched in the Prince Kuhio Day Parade. And the 1:00 and 2:00 jazz bands played at the Hard Rock Cafè.

The Century drum line and winter guard is planning on returning to WGI World Championships this year in Dayton, Ohio. The jazz bands are also going to Reno for the festival there.

Century Stage, the school's drama department, has also been hard at work. The winter play for the 2005-2006 school year was Somewhere in Between (with Kyle Martinak as "Jasper"), and the spring musical was The Sound of Music, starring Melissa Fults (Maria), John Jeffery (Captain Von Trapp), and Kristi Green (Mother Abbess). In the 2006-2007 school year, Century Stage produced Disney's Beauty and the Beast, starring Jordan Parkyn as Beast, Melissa Fults as Belle, Kevin Voltz as Gaston, and Trevor Hennigins as Lafou. Grease has been chosen to be Century Stage's 2008 winter production.

Century is unique because the morning announcements are done on the in-school TV show, JagTV. Students create "news packages" and broadcast them over the TVs in the school. JagTV is supervised by Kieth Allen, who also teaches the broadcasting journalism class. Students also take turns anchoring and running the cameras. Nico Madagora, Dylan Sylwester, Jan Ponttias, Mitch Fennimore, and Mandy Pham have all been featured as anchors for the morning JagTv.

Century Boosters is a school community organization centered on supporting and acknowledging all Century students in Academics, Athletics, and the Arts

The advanced placement courses are the college-level classes offered at Century. There are tests in mid-May that qualify for college credits.
