Century Consumer Mall
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Century Consumer Mall, originally known as Century Mall, was located at the Southeast corner of US 30 and Broadway in Merrillville, Indiana. The mall's original anchors were Goldblatt's and Montgomery Ward.
The mall opened in 1979 and sits just across the Interstate 65 from the larger and more prosperous Southlake Mall. When the mall opened, it was filled with a mix of mostly national typical mall chains.
The first major change was in 1982 when Goldblatt's closed its anchor store at the south end of the mall. That space was soon replaced by a Service Merchandise, Burlington Coat Factory, and a few small shops.
Throughout the late 1980's and 1990's the national merchants left and were gradually replaced by smaller mom and pop type stores. In 1995 the Service Merchandise store left for a new location on US 30 across from Southlake Mall. The final blow to the mall was in 2000 when Montgomery Ward closed all of its remaining stores including the one at Century Mall. This left the mall without an anchor on the north end and led to a closing of the interior of the mall soon after.
The development has been more recently renamed Century Plaza. The Burlington Coat Factory store has been expanded and has taken over the former Service Merchandise space and now encompasses all of the former Goldblatt's space. The former Wards store and the remaining interior space has been demolished. Some of the parking lot area and formerly-enclosed space has been developed bringing in new shops and restaurants including Panera Bread and Golden Corral.
