From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Central Catholic High School is a Catholic co-educational College Prep secondary school in Toledo, Ohio. The School was founded as Cathedral High school in 1919, with its name change in 1920. CCHS moved from its Page street Location to Cherry Street in 1930. It is operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo and is the largest Catholic High School in Toledo.

Central Catholic is located near Downtown Toledo, just one mile northwest. The school offers a diverse educational background with three possible degrees. The degrees available are General Degree, College Prep Degree, and Honors Degree. The school has been awarded a School of Excellence award twice and a Drug Prevention Award Once. Central has a long standing commitment to the community, relying on its four school values. These being Courage, Charity, Honesty, Sanctity (these also happen to be the four abbreviated letters of the CCHS name).

The president is Rev. Dennis P. Hartigan, Ph.D. and the principal is Michael J. Kaucher. Its athletic teams are the Fighting Irish.

In Athletics, Central Catholic has a long and storied tradition. The official colors for central Catholic are scarlet and grey, similar to Ohio State. Their nickname is the Fighting Irish. The Irish athletics were given a new facility in the Fall of 1997 with the opening of the brand new Sullivan Center, a state of the art high school gymnasium which has been hailed as the best in the area.

The biggest rivals for the Irish include fellow parochial schools St. John's Jesuit, St. Ursula Academy, and Notre Dame Academy. However, no rivalry matches the intensity of the St. Francis-Central rivalry. These two schools play every year for the Irish Knight Trophy in football, a famed 3 foot statue of a Knight clad in green and red armour given to the winner of the game each year.

Other rivalries include the Scott Bulldogs, who are located a mere half a mile from Central Catholic, Start, and Whitmer.
