Central Asian Nuclear Weapon Free Zone

The Central Asian Nuclear Weapon Free Zone treaty is a legally binding commitment by Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan not to manufacture, acquire, test, or possess nuclear weapons. The treaty was signed on September 8, 2006 at Semipalatinsk Test Site, Kazakhstan.
The treaty has received support from Russia and China but not from the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, who cite concerns with treaty ambiguities. Concerns of the United States, France, and the UK remain about future expansion of the free zone, possibly to include Iran or other neighboring states, as well as a treaty provision regarding the relationship of the treaty to other international agreements.
