Centiare

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A centiare (symbol ca) is a unit of area, equal to 1 square meter, used in some countries for measuring small land areas, usually in combination with ares, e.g. 1a 16ca = 116 m². Though its base unit, the are, was defined by older forms of the metric system, it is not part of the modern metric system, the International System (SI). It is accepted, but not encouraged, for use with the SI.

[edit] Definition

1 centiare = 0.01 ares = 1 square metre = 1 m² = 1 m × 1 m.

The name is a contraction of the SI prefix centi + are; a centiare is 0.01 ares.

One can write : 1a 16ca for an area of 116m² (ie 1 × 100 m² + 16 × 1 m²)
