Thanks Sam. But I wouldn't call myself "new". I've been editing articles since March of 2004 and have been using Wikipedia for years now. Always nice to receive a kind greeting though. Thank you :) Celerityfm 17:57, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Tracking vandalism on pages

Hey there...saw some of your recent contributions. Can I help you out? I'm one of the good IPs around here :-) --216.191.200.1 19:28, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

Hey there good IP :) Glad to have you aboard. Would love more good editors helping out. Together we can end vandalism! Or.. atleast fix it whenever it springs up :) Cheers. Celerityfm 19:30, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
Ah, I see. One suggestion though...usually one or two mini vandalisms isn't sufficient for a block. It's annoying, but at least it's easy to fix.
If you like, you can add a test template to these IPs instead of providing evidence for the vandalisms. The administrators here who block IPs check their contributions history pretty thoroughly. Just add the text {{subst:test1}} for a first vandalism, and continue to escalate this via test2, test3, test4, test5. Usually a test1 or test2 is enough to ward off the vandalism. If it gets really severe, there's always WP:AIV you can report the IPs to. --216.191.200.1 19:39, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

Well to be fair I've never attempted a block (there is one IP in there where someone else added a block warning, not I though). The reason I creating entries under these IPs was to help me track IPs that come back and do it again. I like the {{subst:test1}} method though, I'm going to go back and update my entries! Thanks! Ooooo, this {{subst:test1}} stuff is AWESOME. Thank you! Celerityfm 19:49, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

Ok. Final note. I didn't know what you meant by "can I help you out" I thought you meant "can I contribute to your crusade" not "I have a tip for you" :) However, your tip is most excellent and I appreciate you taking the time to educate me. Thank you!! Celerityfm 19:55, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

Well, I guess I meant it both ways. You've gotta admit, it's pretty nice to meet Wikipedians like me once in a while. :-) I'll keep an eye on that article, and if it gets really bad, might even request a page protection. See this for details. Doesn't look too bad at the moment.
The brace brackets are used to insert templates and pages into articles. If you don't use the word "subst:", what happens is that the content of that template or page is not replicated to the page. So, for example, if you added say {{welcome}} to a page, and someone decided to vandalise the welcome, everywhere on Wikipedia that has that tag will be vandalised! So, it's generally a good idea to put "subst" for stuff like that. --216.191.200.1 20:06, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

Indeed it is nice to meet nice Wikipedians like yourself :) By the way.. which article are we talking about? This one? In any case I appreciate it! Will keep using "subst:" for this, thats very cool. Thanks. Celerityfm 20:14, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] User pages

Please remember to post vandalism warnings on the talk pages, not the user pages. If you post to the talk page, they get a new message notification. --GraemeL (talk) 23:52, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

(bows) Thank you. I realized that halfway through my application of the warnings and haven't had a chance to go back and fix the ones I did incorrectly. I will fix this now though, thank you! Celerityfm 02:14, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
