Cedar Creek Country Club

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cedar Creek Country Club is a private, 18-hole golf establishment in Onalaska, Wisconsin. The 200-acre course was designed by Bob Lohmann and built in 1990. According to the Cedar Creek website [1], the course "quickly delivered a nomination for Golf Digest’s 'Best New Courses'". According to Golf.com [2], Cedar Creek can best be described as a, "tight course [that] has out-of-bounds stakes lining almost all its fairways. There are either sand bunkers or water hazards (ponds) coming into play on every hole".

The course itself features a flexible level of difficulty; it can be relatively straightforward or challenging, especially due to its ample bunkers and ponds. Aesthetically, the course is well-designed, well-maintained, and remains green and preened during the entire golfing season, regardless of temperature. The course superintendent as of 2007 is Darrin Armstrong; he and his predecessor Brent Peterson have been credited with raising the standards of quality for other area courses via their work on Cedar Creek.

The clubhouse is a beautiful alabaster-stone edifice with a large central atrium featuring a vaulted, wooden ceiling; a large banquet hall in a similar style finishes off the center of the building; two wings feature a large, wedding-style banquet hall at one end and the pro shop and bar and grill at the other.

Cedar Creek Bar and Grill, open to the public, features a full bar open seven days a week during the golfing season, as well as a diverse menu and reasonable prices relative to other area dining establishments. The staple of the Cedar Creek Bar and Grill is its daily special offerings. Wednesdays feature an array of Tex-Mex specials; Thursdays feature steak and pork entrees; Fridays feature fine seafood offerings, including batterfried haddock, broiled haddock with an herbed breadcrumb topping, and an ever-changing fine seafood. In addition, Fridays feature a fine filet mignon special served with salad, veggies, and hashbrowns. Cedar Creek draws from a history as a regionally-renowned restaurant; this is evident in its style and offerings.

Cedar Creek Banquet and Meeting Center is a public facility utilizing two large banquet halls. Generally impressive for its views of the course, the total capacity of the facility is 580 guests. The Banquet and Meeting Center specializes in wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, business meetings, and has accommodated a wide diversity of other functions. Angie Blegen is the director of banquets, and Chef Mark Hofschild personally prepares food from a diverse, metropolitan banquet menu. The price is slightly above par with other area banquet facilities, but feedback from customers has been almost exclusively positive.

Cedar Creek Country Club is owned and managed by Wilson Golf Group of Minneapolis, Mn. It was purchased from the original three co-owners in 2001; golf services have improved since that purchase, but many members regard the reduction of food services offered as a mistake that has reduced the prosperity of the establishment [3] and forced tight budgeting practices. Management does not comment on fiscal matters.

Staff as of February 2007 include: Dave Cornelius (General Manager); Mark Schneider (Golf Professional); Darrin Armstrong (Course Superintendant); Mark Hofschild (Executive Chef); Angie Blegen (Food and Beverage/Banquet Director); Amy Mader (Bar Manager).
