[edit] History
Club Deportivo Tenerife was founded in 1922, but some documents show the existence of Sporting Club Tenerife earlier, in 1912. This was, maybe, the precursor of the actual team.
The Spanish league started in 1928, but C.D. Tenerife played in regional divisions until they where promoted to old Spanish Segunda División in 1953. C.D. Tenerife were promoted to La Liga in 1961, but they couldn't prevent the relegation in the 1961/1962 season.
Tenerife continued between Segunda División and Tercera División, from 1962 to 1976. In that year, Spanish league created the Segunda División B, where C.D. Tenerife played 6 seasons.
In 1985, when C.D. Tenerife were regelated to Segunda División B a second time, Javier Pérez became President of the club. C.D. Tenerife promoted this year to Segunda División and, two years later, they got the return to the La Liga. It was in 1989, and C.D. Tenerife won a promotion match against Real Betis.
In 1992, with Jorge Valdano as trainer, C.D. Tenerife beat Real Madrid in the last match of the season, escaping relegation. FC Barcelona took the league Championship. The next year, C.D. Tenerife encountered the same situation against Real Madrid, and again, C.D. Tenerife won the match and FC Barcelona won the League. But this time, C.D. Tenerife was 5th and, so, they played in the UEFA Cup the next year. In the 1993/94 UEFA Cup, C.D. Tenerife lost to Juventus 4-2 on aggregate in the third round prior to the quarterfinals.
In 1995, Jupp Heynckes became the trainer of the club. They again qualified for the UEFA Cup beating Maccabi Tel-Aviv, SS Lazio Roma (5-4 on aggregate, beating Lazio 5-3 in the 2nd leg in Santa Cruz), Feyenoord Rotterdam, Brøndby IF (the winner coming late in extra time from an Antonio Mata free kick). Tenerife were eventually beaten by winners Schalke 04 in the semifinals 2-1 on aggregate.
C.D. Tenerife then went on a downward spiral which eventually led to relagation to the Segunda División in 1999 prompting various managerial changes within the club. In 2001 they were again promoted lead by Rafael Benitez who promptly left to take up the managers job at Valencia C.F. Tenerife won promotion on the last match of the season thanks to a goal from Hugo Morales.
Pepe Mel became the new trainer but the season in the Primera never really took off, Tenerife were beaten heavily at home by F.C. Barcelona 6-0, Pepe Mel lost his job. Javier Clemente the former manager of Spain took the job and made a good effort of saving the season but it was too late and C.D. Tenerife were again relegated to the Segunda Division also taking their Rivals U.D. Las Palmas with them thanks to a 1-0 win in Gran Canaria from Bruno Marioni goal.
C.D. Tenerife has been in many troubles due to the enormous debt, more than 40 million euro. Javier Perez was replaced with Víctor Perez de Ascanio, who resigned due to his bad management. The actual president, Miguel Concepción, has been negotiating with politicians and businessmen, and created a construction company as a subsidiary of C.D. Tenerife.
Anecdote: Fans of C.D. Tenerife are called "Chicharreros" because of the inhabitants of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Many years ago, this little fishermans village (now the capital of Tenerife) ate a lot of "chicharros" (a little fish). Other inhabitants of Tenerife used "Chicharreros" as a pejorative name, but finally the inhabitants of Santa Cruz accepted "Chicharrero" as an affectionate name.
