[edit] Etymology and other origins

'Cava' is also Latin for 'cave', which may better illustrate the origin of the name; the Catalan language is heavily infuenced by Latin and cava is & was traditionally matured in caves, rather than cellars.

  • Well, it is not exactly that Catalan is "heavily influenced by Latin" but rather that, as any other Romance language, directly descends from it. English, on the other hand, and being a Germanic language, is indeed highly influenced by old French and Latin.
