[edit] Coinage of the Federal Republic of Germany

What should we do with all the images at Coinage of the Federal Republic of Germany? Mushroom (Talk) 21:37, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

I believe German coinage is not public domain (I could be wrong), and therefore those images are fair use. A fair use list is a litte hard to stomach--I'm assuming that's what Mushroom means by the question--because it doesn't actually discuss the images. So it's not great. On the other hand, if we bring 'em up at Wikipedia talk:Copyrights we'll be accused of copyright paranoia. I think they're borderline and I could sleep nights if we just left them, in short. If you guys want to list them at IfD, though, I'll help. Chick Bowen 02:49, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

  • Yes, that's exactly what I meant: 34 fair use images and little text. Mushroom (Talk) 02:57, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
  • Well, I assume these were created by pointing a camera at the coins, or placing the coins on the glass of a document scanner. Wouldn't the licensing be at the whim of whoever did that task? — Feb. 17, '06 [03:01] <freakofnurxture|talk>
    • Yes, but they come from worldcoingallery.com and are used under permission. They couldn't be used if uploaded today. See {{WorldCoin}}. Mushroom (Talk) 03:12, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
      • Ok, I see. I assume then, that if I owned foreign currency (which I don't) and scanned images of it myself and uploaded it as {{PD-self}}, everything would be okay, even though nobody could tell the difference? — Feb. 18, '06 [18:00] <freakofnurxture|talk>
        • Yep. The problem is that coins aren't two-dimensional. Chick Bowen 18:10, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
  • All right, I'm going to start listing them at IfD. I don't think we can delete them outright because they're not cut-and-dried. I'll start from the bottom--won't get all of them right now (it's very nearly tea time). Chick Bowen 20:19, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] my connection fails it

Once again my bot got booted from AOL at about 3 AM last night (UTC -6). Continuing now... — Feb. 18, '06 [17:57] <freakofnurxture|talk>

[edit] Kiop

Please note: all images by User:Kiop, who was indefinitely banned for copyright issues, should be regarded with extreme suspicion. Chick Bowen 20:00, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

The same goes for User:Marvelvsdc. Mushroom (Talk) 08:59, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

I am getting so very tired of JillandJack--you must be too, Mushroom. They were so careless; so many of their images are good ones, and they could easily have provided an actual source, instead of part of a URL, or assuming that a source wasn't necessary for a PD image. There must be at least 5- or 600 of them. Grumble. Chick Bowen 23:21, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Adam Bishop who originally identified JillandJack as a sockpuppet of User:DW, has posted this on my talk page: Since DW was banned for uploading copyrighted images, I think it's safe to speedily delete anything uploaded by DW or Jillandjack. I will start doing this, and removing from articles obviously, for non-orphan images that are obviously going to be deleted anyway. Chick Bowen 03:10, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Subpages

I have split this page into sub-pages by letter, to make things more manageable. Also I creatively polluted everybody's watchlist with all of the subpages in advance. Enjoy. — Mar. 3, '06 [11:40] <freakofnurxture|talk>

[edit] Good news!

I now have cable internet, woot! The rate of list generation should increase rapidly compared to what it has been (assuming an even distribution of bad images throughout the alphabet, of course) due to a faster connection, and no offline time. — Mar. 7, '06 [23:02] <freakofnurxture|talk>

I noticed things seemed to have picked up. Congratulations. I've been going through JillandJack's contributions ahead of the bot in the alphabet, also in an attempt to speed things up by deleting as many as possible before it gets there. Chick Bowen 23:22, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Okay, cool. So I assume we are deleting any images from them which are not absolutely critical to some article? — Mar. 8, '06 [09:58] <freakofnurxture|talk>
Well, I've been applying some discretion. There are a lot of fair use images with incomplete sources--they leave an ellipsis in the URL. I've been deleting all of those. Some of the PD ones I mark no source and the no source gnomes sometimes find sources for them, which I think is fine, although if it seems unlikely to me that a source could be found I will delete them. Some of them do have real sources and check out, although sometimes it takes some work to find them, since there are often spaces or other abnormalities in the URLs. Some of these I've left and plan to go back to later, and some I've deleted if they're particular sloppy. The weird thing about JillandJack is that I don't think they were intentional copyright violators--they were just extremely careless. So how much work we do to clean up after them is ultimately, I think, up to us. Chick Bowen 16:35, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Note on alphabetic sorting

Due to the way that the bot searches, images starting with a letter outside the range [A-Z] have not been processed as yet as they are, by default, alphabetically sorted after Z. I have programmed the bot to determine which subpage to post to using a conversion of the first letter to a simplified form, for example:

É, Ë, Ē → E and Ļ, Ĺ, Ł → L

The mapping is according to the table stored at User:Catapult/Unicode, which is protected to avoid sabotage or other undesirable operation of the bot (and is also used in unrelated tasks). Thus, any suspect images starting with such letters will be appended to old pages, which may have been previously marked as "done". The order in which these will be posted will, to my knowledge, be determined by the Unicode index of the first letter, rather than alphabetically by the "normal letter" to which it is reduced. For example,

465 0x1d1 Ǒ LATIN CAPITAL LETTER O WITH CARON

actually comes after:

374 0x176 Ŷ LATIN CAPITAL LETTER Y WITH CIRCUMFLEX

Because of this I felt it would be wise to remind everybody to go back and check for unresolved image listings at that time, and not to remove the pages from your watchlists until the process is actually complete. — Mar. 12, '06 [17:41] <freakofnurxture|talk>

[edit] Leaving

Guys, I'm taking off for a while--see my userpage. Sorry to leave you in the lurch, but the list doesn't too much further to go. I'm going to ask a couple of more admins to take a look at it. Chick Bowen 00:02, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] List complete!

Only one "bad image" began with an unusual letter (Image:Çiçek Passage-1.jpg), so the end of the alphabet wasn't as annoying as I thought it would be. — Mar. 17, '06 [00:35] <freakofnurxture|talk>
