[edit] Featured portal tips
Please add any tips here on how this page can be improved to Featured portal status. Thanks. Rfrisbietalk 18:18, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
- A very nice portal, According to Cats WikiProject, we have four featured articles in this category. So the portal's selected article section could be rotated on the basis of a month or a fortnight. Similarly for selected picture section some good pictures are available to rotate on monthly basis. I do not have much knowledge about the cats, so I can not specify if you missed out some topics or categories. Please check out. It would be good if a "Related portals" section could be made available including Portal:Science, Portal:Biology, Portal:Dogs. I could not go into much detail, but when I get time I would let you know. But the portal desereves to be featured after little amount of work. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 18:56, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
- It's good to update the portal on a regular, consistent basis. It helps to have multiple people working on the portal. I noticed that Portal:Architecture has a maintenance schedule: User:Mcginnly/Sandbox/Portal_rotation_roster. These suggestions apply to Portal:Dogs too. --Aude (talk) 19:09, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback. Just a note on rotations. The articles, pictures and breeds are on a randomized rotation every time the page is purged. You can see what's on the rotation lists by "edit"ing the respective items. Readers also can refresh the items displayed by clicking the Show another article, picture, breed link in the lower left-hand corner of the introduction. Rfrisbietalk 20:13, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
- Nice, I like the randomized rotations. I think it makes portal management easier. That was my main concern. For the "selected" picture, I tried centering the Tiger picture. Only my personal preference, but think it looks better that way. Can't think of anything else. --Aude (talk) 00:44, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- I would appericiate your work. Good work. I think it could be nominate for feature portal candidates after crateing related portals section and some work, if needed. It would be good to have multiple maintainers for the portal. Shyam (T/C) 20:24, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
A few suggestions:
- Selected picture should be resized, or placed in left-hand column if you don't want to resize. On my computer with Firefox, it looks really distorted and extends way out of the box parameters.
- Expand Cat...egories.
- Things you can do-Make a template for that maybe? And follow format similarly to to Template:Bizetasks.
- Also expand Selected topics about Cats. It's a basically biased list, and I think expanding it to cover all areas of cats would improve it.
- You should also have a link for other users to make suggestions for future featured articles. Also required is an archive for DYK, featured picture, featured article, and featured breed.
For the most part, it looks great. =) Nishkid64 21:44, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
- Re: The selected picture size - only affected at 800x600 screen res. See a screenshot at Image:Wikipedia-cat portal image size demo.png. The right-hand column is 220px wide at that resolution, so an image would need to be thinner than that.
- An easy way to check 800x600 screen resolution, is to set your browser's sidebar to an appropriate width - see screenshot - (make an 800px wide image in a sandbox, to figure out how wide 800px is). -Quiddity 05:07, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Very nice portal, overall. A few minor things to look at:
- The DYK box needs an archive too.
- The [edit] links need to point to the actual selected whatever blurb, not to the archive page; the current setup is extremely counterintutive. This will require bringing the rotation code out to the main portal page, I think.
- Moving the purge link out of the intro box might be a good idea, as it's easy to miss there.
- More topics should be listed.
- A listing of related portals would probably be worthwhile here.
Other than that, looks great. Kirill Lokshin 03:03, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

- Portals and articles always grow faster if you get wikiprojects to take care of them. Same goes for the Dogs portal. Wesborland 00:35, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

- I agree with Wesborland. It would be a great idea to organize groups of people interested in common topics and try to put the hands together in order to make to most for the improvement of the project in question. Nevertheless, I find this portal really well-organized, charming, and the cats seem lovely, as well as the tigers and lions. I haven't had a look at the Dogs' portal yet, but I'll do it in a hurry!
