Catharanthus roseus (Cape periwinkle, Cayenne jasmine, Madagascar periwinkle, Old maidor, Red periwinkle, Rose periwinkle, Rosy periwinkle; syn. Vinca rosea) is is a hallucinogenic plant native to Madagascar. This plant is cited in Louisiana State Act 159.
It is an endangered rainforest plant; the main cause of decline is habitat destruction by slash and burn agriculture.
The substances vinblastine and vincristine extracted from the plant are used in the treatment of leukaemia and Hodgkin's disease.
