Catcher in the Rye is the name of a song written by Axl Rose which may or may not be included on the forthcoming album Chinese Democracy. The song was written by Rose as an allusion to the assassination of John Lennon. The song leaked onto the Internet in 2005 along with three other songs from the "Chinese Democracy" record. Rose had stated in a 1999 interview that he planned on recording the song with the help of Brian May, who later confirmed on his official website after the song had leaked that he had, indeed, played guitar on the track. This indicates that the song was recorded some time between 1999 and 2004 (when the band temporarily disbanded due to the departure of lead guitarist Buckethead).

Most fans have praised the song for its lyrical complexity and themes. It is written from the perspective of Lennon's killer and named after the novel "Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger. Lennon's killer, Mark David Chapman, was arrested with a copy of the book and later claimed to have read it dozens of times.
