[edit] Current issues

[edit] Girl's basketball controversy

There have been complaints by parents of basketball players claiming that Nancy Nibarger, the girl's basketball coach, chose the team unfairly, and was unapproachable and angry all the time. According to the San Francisco Chronicle columnist C.W. Nevius, the school agreed to allow a six-person panel choose the team along with the coach. On November 20, 2006, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that none of the daughters of the complaining parents made the cut.[1]

[edit] Construction

The school's biggest project for the 2006-2007 school year is a new stadium for the football, soccer, and track teams and a new auxiliary gymnasium that will include a new weight room and wrestling room. The former stadium was aging and was torn down. The new gymnasium is being built to fit larger PE classes and to hold practices for volleyball, basketball, and wrestling. In addition to the construction, the practice fields used for football, soccer, and cross country practices, as well as PE classes, are all being renovated due to the large number of injuries caused by potholes and uneven terrain. Many teams have been forced to relocate practice to nearby Canyon Middle School. The football team played home games at nearby Chabot College in Hayward, California. The football stadium and gymnasium are expected to be completed in time for the 2007 season.

Castro Valley Unified School District also just opened a new Center for the Arts. Although drama classes and band dress rehearsals are held there and the center is built on CVHS's grounds, it is not part of the high school proper. The auditorium is used by many groups, and reservations are full nearly year-round.

The school will be undertaking a $900,000 library renovation project to bring the library up to date and state standards. The new media center will include a new computer lab, book-room, redesigned floor-space and auxiliary office space.

[edit] Parking problem

As a result of the vast amount of construction taking place on campus, students have lost more than half of their parking. A lottery was taken to determine who would get parking permits. Permits only last one semester, and those who receive it the first semester are ineligible to get it again second semester.

[edit] Overcrowding

The school has experienced overcrowding in recent years, due to a large bubble in enrollment in the district. The school has dealt with the increased population by building several new buildings and renovating others. A second gym and new sports stadium are also being constructed. As the population in the district begins to even out, Castro Valley High School will be well situated to serve the population of the relatively small town it serves.

[edit] Plans for the future

Debbie Coco, the former principal, has resigned as principal as of October 31. She notes that the wishes to spend more time with her family. The interim principal is Lisa Garcia, formerly an Associate Principal. Although she is "interim," Garcia's tenure as princial has been extended through the 2007-2008 school year.

Due to the Varsity Girls Basketball issue concerning Nancy Nibarger, Craig Nieves, and the rest of the football coach staff, have recently tendered their resignations as coach. Nieves, a physical education teacher at CVHS, will continue to teach.

The school is slowly moving toward a healthier menu by removing certain snacks from vending machines and serving healthier lunch items.
