The Castlepoint lighthouse shone first on the 12 January 1913. The tower is 52 meters above sea level and 23 meters high. The 1000-watt lamp can be seen for 48 kilometers. Originally the lighthouse burnt oil to make the light, was switched to diesel generated electricity in 1954, and in 1961 was converted to mains electricity. In 1988 the lighthouse keeper was withdrawn and today it is only monitored by Maritime New Zealand staff and a computer based in Wellington.
