Castle Sween is located next to Loch Sween, near Tarbert, on the Kintyre peninsula in western Scotland. It was built in the 12th century by the Clan MacSuibne, descendents of the 11th century king Suibne mac CinĂ¡eda. Towers were added in the 14th and 15th century whilst under the ownership of Clan MacMillan and the Stewart Earls of Menteith. The building was then owned by the MacDonald Lords of the Isles before reverting to the crown in 1841. James III appointed Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll as the Keeper.
