Cass City, Michigan

Cass City is a village in Tuscola County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,643 at the 2000 census. Cass City is the birthplace of Baseball Hall of Fame member Leland MacPhail, as well as astronaut Brewster H. Shaw. The town is named after the nearby Cass River, which in turn was named after Lewis Cass.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²), all land.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 2,643 people, 1,100 households, and 712 families residing in the village. The population density was 589.9/km² (1,523.7/mi²). There were 1,159 housing units at an average density of 258.7/km² (668.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.69% White, 0.34% African American, 0.87% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.23% from other races, and 0.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.25% of the population.

There were 1,100 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 32.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the village the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $33,397, and the median income for a family was $41,289. Males had a median income of $31,714 versus $24,853 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,159. About 8.1% of families and 10.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.4% of those under age 18 and 7.1% of those age 65 or over.
