Merrill spend nine full seasons in professional football as a defense running back. He was part of the 1986 season New York Giants, but was traded to another team, the New Orleans Saints and he missed Super Bowl XXI in 1987 when the NY Giants won the league championship title. However, Merrill has a super bowl ring from team mates who never forgot his role in that season.[citation needed]
[edit] Personal Life
Born in Danville, California east of Oakland on July 16, 1957, Richard Casey Merrill was born to an upper-middle class family of Irish American parentage. As a child, Merrill became interested in playing sports such as baseball, basketball, horse riding and wrestling. He received a sports scholarship to play football for the University of California Davis football team in 1976 and 1977, when he was drafted by the Packers in the NFL Draft in 1978.
Merrill retired from sports in 1988 and went on to self-establishing a commercial Land appraisal business in the 1990's that still operates today from his home in the California desert community of Bermuda Dunes near Indio. Recently, the home office became an actual business in a Palm Desert shopping center.[citation needed]
Merrill married Nilda, a NY Giants personnel secretary, in 1991 and raised five children together, one of them Zach, was diagnosed with high-functioning autism but has a high school sports resumé like his brother Casey Jr. in Palm Desert High School. Merrill has a vacation home in a ranch near Borrego Springs east of San Diego.[citation needed]
