From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Casco Bay High School is a public Expeditionary Learning school in Portland, Maine. For the 2005-06 and 2006-07 school years the school was housed on Allen Avenue in the city's North Deering neighborhood. Plans are being finalized to relocate the school to Ocean Avenue in the site of the former Baxter Elementary School for the 2007-08 school year and beyond. Casco Bay is one of the three public high schools Portland high school age students can elect to attend, regardless of neighborhood. (The other two high schools are Portland High School and Deering High School.)
Opening its doors in 2005, Casco Bay High made Portland the first city in the United States to have Expeditionary Learning K-12.[1] Every year, Casco Bay plans to add a grade level, with 100 students per grade, for a maximum capacity of 400 students.[1] The school, now in its second year of operation, has 180 students in its Freshman and Sophomore classes.[2]
Every student entering Casco Bay High School is assigned into a crew. The student will stay in this crew for the duration of his stay in the high school. Crew is a group of 10 to 15 students and one faculty member, the purpose of crew is to give each student individual attention and modivation. Activities are held within crew four days a week. Freshmen students and their crews are sent on a one week long Outward Bound mini expedition. For that week students will be either hiking or sailing in order to get to know their crew members. Active members on this trip will receive .5 credits for fitness.
