[edit] Military Service and the Maras

Although the media has made a correlation between the proliferation of Maras and the elimination of conscription, the data to support it is weak at best. A large percentage of young Honduras who were conscripted were snatched from buses and movie theaters, which can't be considereed a good start for a young person looking for guidance. Conscription was eliminated, but not the military service as such. If a young man is or was looking for an alternative to maras that option would still be available and under much better circumstances. Additionally young men or women join the Maras at a much early age than the 18 year old age limit to join the military. If an alternative is to be available to the youth, it has to be available to them at a much early age. Military service is not one of them. My personal view is that has mandatory military service remained, it would have not made a dent into the current status and proliferation of Maras. Wikihonduras 14:09, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
