Carrington, Greater Manchester

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carrington is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The village is west of the Manchester conurbation, and is the site of large gas and chemical works, which produces gases by fractional distillation of liquid air. It used to be the site of Shell Petrochemicals who produced polyethene and polystyrene. Until recent years there was a power station fired by coal. The building of the power station commenced in 1947, although the land for the site was acquired in 1916. The station opened in 1956, and torn down some time during the 1990's; the electrical theme remains with a large 400kV switching station.

Both Manchester United and Manchester City Football Clubs have a training complex in Carrington as do Sale Sharks Rugby Club.

According to the 2001 census it had a population of 396.

The village is better known among some groups as the location of the former A6144(M), the Carrington Spur.
