Carrera family

The Carrera family of Chile became politically influential during the colonial period, played a significant role in Chilean Independence, and remained important throughout the 19th century. Its most prominent members were the children and descendants of Ignacio de la Carrera, a member of Chile's first ruling junta in 1810.
His children are known in Chilean history as the Hermanos Carrera (Carrera siblings). All except Javiera were military commanders in the fight against Spanish reconquest:
- Javiera Carrera - "Mother" of Chile who sewed its first flag
- General José Miguel Carrera - Governed Chile during its first period of independence, the Patria Vieja period.
- Brigadier Juan José Carrera
- Colonel Luis Carrera
Some of their descendants were also notable in their time:
- José Miguel Carrera Fontecilla, leader of the Chilean Civil War of 1851
- Ignacio Carrera Pinto, grandson of José Miguel Carrera Verdugo, Chilean soldier. He died the Battle of La Concepcion during the War of the Pacific.
- Federico Santa María Carrera businessman and philanthropist.
