[edit] Early Life
Carol Johnson was born in Milan, but brought up in an all-world childhood. She has other two sisters and one brother. Carol's father was owner of a national-company in North Italy during a late 80's and, when the business failed when he passed away Carol's family suffered a severe decline in their standard of living, circumstances which have featured in a number of works. Around the age of 18 she was raped or "broken in" as she describes the then-current term.
She studied fashion, graphic design and architecture at the "College for the Creative Arts". In 1996 she studied printing at Institute of Art and Design and Art College, which she has described as one of the best experiences of her life. In 1997 she moved back to Milan to study at the College of Art, where she obtained an Master's degree in painting. Her influences included Edvard Munch and Egon Schiele; later she destroyed all her paintings from this early period.
[edit] Artist
In 2000 Carol opened her own mind with other artists. During this period Carol was working with the gallerist Sam.
In 2001 she had her first solo show at the Le Trottoir Gallery, a leading contemporary art gallery in Milan. It was called Sam's Retrospective, consisting of photographs, and photos of her early paintings, as well as items such as a packet of cigarettes and ashtrays.
[edit] Painting
There is a complex history of Carol's relationship with painting. She has often cited the works of Munch and Schiele as major influences. She started painting in the mid 1990s in an Expressionist style.
