Carnivine (マスキッパ Masukippa?, Muskippa in original Japanese language versions) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Carnivine is famous for being one of the Pokémon revealed before the Japanese release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The purpose of Carnivine in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]

Its name is derived from carnivore and vine. The Japanese name Muskippa comes from Dionaea muscipula, the scientific name for the Venus Flytrap.

The English name Carnivine was confirmed at the 2007 American International Toy Fair in New York City.[3]

[edit] Biological characteristics

Carnivine resembles a flying flytrap. It does not evolve and has no pre-evolved form.

It is called the Bug Trap Pokémon because it is skilled at seizing prey. After luring a Bug-type near with the delicious smelling liquid that it secretes, it chomps down on the prey with its massive jaw. Then, it slowly eats the prey over the course of an entire day (compare with Victreebel). It tends to favour Yanma and Venonat.

[edit] In the video games

Carnivine has the Pokémon ability 'Levitate', which will prevent it from taking damage from any Ground-based moves.

In terms of attacks, Carnivine learns Grass-type moves, such as Vine Whip. It is also one of few able to learn the excellent physical Grass-type move Power Whip, with a base power of 120.

Despite being the Bug-Trap Pokémon, it is weak against Bug-type attacks, being Grass.

It can also be found in grassy areas of the Safari Zone, but it's rather uncommon.

[edit] In the Pokémon anime

Carnivine first appeared in the second Diamond and Pearl episode, "Find Pikachu! Route 202!", when Team Rocket takes shelter in one of the mansions belonging to James' family. They find a chest with bottle caps and a Pokéball, where they find Carnivine. As it turns out, this Carnivine was James' Pokémon when he was younger, and James ends up taking Carnivine along with him. James' Carnivine has the tendency to show affection to James by chomping on his head and hugging him simultaneously when he is released from his Poké Ball (compare with Victreebel and Cacnea).
