[edit] Character Storyline
[edit] Pre-season two
Carmen's father, a Mayan medicine man, was killed in a car accident before she was born. She has a Mayan tattoo on her lower back to commemerate him. She first discovered her sexuality when she was 16, when she fell in love with Lucia Torres, a girl at her high school. Lucia eventually cheated on her boyfriend Pablo Fuentes with Carmen. Carmen implies that this was a dangerous move at her high school, as "you didn't fuck with Pablo's girl, but I did." Carmen says that she is a gold star, or a lesbian who has never slept with a man.
[edit] Season two
Carmen is a production assistant at the TV station where Shane works as a hairdresser, though she tells Shane that she DJs as a hobby and dreams of doing it as a full-time job. Shane treats Carmen as a casual hook-up, though Carmen clearly has deeper feelings for Shane and wants to persue a relationship with her. After several unsuccessful attempts at winning Shane over, Carmen hooks up with Shane's roommate Jenny Schecter. Shane repeatedly says she has no trouble with it, though Jenny quickly figures out that Carmen does not have any feelings for her, and only wants to be close to Shane and make her jealous. It soon becomes obvious that Shane has developed very strong feelings for Carmen, but is afraid of getting close to another person. In the second season finale, Lacuna, Shane finally says "I love you" for the first time on the show, to which Carmen does not respond.
[edit] Season three
In the six months that have passed between the second and third season, Carmen has moved in with Shane and Jenny. She introduces Shane to her family as a "friend", telling Shane that her family is too traditional to accept their relationship, and would look the other way even when faced with obvious clues. Shane becomes close to Carmen's family, having never had one of her own. When Shane and Carmen get matching tattoos, Carmen's grandmother notices, remarking that they are tattoos of matrimony. After Carmen's mother tries to hook Shane up with a carpet cleaning businessman, Carmen comes out to her family. Carmen's mother reacts in anger and effectively disowns her.
Carmen's DJing career begins to take off and becomes her full-time job. When Shane's ex, Cherie Jaffe (Rosanna Arquette), tries to get back in touch with Shane, Carmen becomes jealous. She flirts with record executives who are checking out her DJing in front of Shane to try to get even. Shane reacts by cheating on Carmen with Cherie in the episode 3.05 Lifeline. Carmen finds out, and the relationship between Carmen and Shane becomes troubled. Carmen believes Shane is turning down sex in order to punish Carmen for forcing her into monogamy, and Shane believes Carmen cannot understand her life's circumstances that make monogamy difficult for her. Carmen later admits to Shane that she cheated on her with a woman named Robin out of anger at Shane's infidelity, but it is never made clear if Carmen is telling the truth or if she wanted to see how Shane would react. During Dana's funeral in episode 3.11, Last Dance, a grief-stricken Shane asks Carmen to marry her. Carmen does not respond at first, but eventually accepts.
The third season finale takes place on Shane and Carmen's wedding day, which is financed by Helena Peabody and happening in Whistler, British Columbia where same-sex marriage is legal. Carmen's family show up to the wedding and apologize for not accepting her sexuality. Meanwhile, Shane witnesses her married father flirting with another woman. He says to her "I'm not proud of this, it's just who I am. You know what I'm talking about." This scares Shane into thinking she will never be faithful to Carmen and break her heart, causing her to leave Carmen at the altar.
[edit] Season four
In the first episode of season four, Shane shows up at Carmen's house to try to talk it over with her. She is met with two of Carmen's male cousins, who beat Shane up and tell her that Carmen never wants to see her again. Despite recurring rumors that Carmen's character will return to the show, she has not appeared since the finale of season three.
