Catholic university founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 24, 1929 by the Sisters of Mercy from Carlow, Ireland. Originally called Mount Mercy College, the name was changed to Carlow College in April 1969. In 2004, Carlow College achieved university status. It was originally a women's college until 1945 when men were admitted. The current student body is 93% women and 7% men. The number of men seems to increase slightly each year.

The small campus sits in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh at 3333 Fifth Avenue.
- Frances Warde Hall

- This building is the center of Carlow's campus. The main lobby and computer labs are here, along with student life and half the dormitories. Men are not permitted to live in the dormitories, Frances Warde and Dougherty Halls
- Dougherty Hall

- The main dorm building, composed of seven floors of dorms, the business offices, and Franny's cafe. Most incoming freshman find themselves on floors 4, 5, and 6 of Dougherty. Dougherty is connected to Frances Warde Hall, and many consider them to be the same building.
- A.J. Palumbo Hall of Science and Technology

- Called "A.J.P." by students, this building is the newest addition to Carlow, built in 1997 (opened in 1999,) housing the departments of biology, chemistry and physics, and mathematics under one roof with state of the art laboratory equipment, several computer labs, and a greenhouse.
- Aquinas Hall

- This is the humanities building, one of the oldest looking buildings on campus. It houses one computer classroom for writing classes as well as the MFA in Creative Writing program on the first floor, lovingly called the "basement" by many students.

- This building houses the theatre for campus productions, the School of Social Change, the Art department, the Institutional Relations department, the information technology department, and the Admissions offices.
Carlow University houses a chapel on campus in Frances Warde Hall. Next to the chapel there is a convent which contains a hospice for elderly and sick nuns. There is an elementary and middle school on campus as well, called the Campus School.

The Mission of Carlow University, a Catholic liberal arts university, is to involve persons, primarily women, in a process of self-directed, lifelong learning which will free them to think clearly and creatively, to discover and to challenge or affirm cultural and aesthetic values, to respond reverently and sensitively to God and others, and to render competent and compassionate service in personal and professional life.

- The American Chemical Society - Student Affiliates of Carlow University (ACS-SA). This student group is an official affiliate of the National ACS and has won recognition both locally and nationally for their leadership and promotion of the science of chemistry in the community.

- Carlow's student-run newspaper, the Menace is a monthly publication. From 2002-2006 its head editors were Mehgan McKenna and Nicole Stemple. The upcoming editor is Laura Smith.

- The campus' women's organization, F.E.M.M.E. seeks to educate men and women on women's issues as well as advocating. Rebecca Label is the president.
