Carlos Sandoval

Carlos Sandoval is a freelance composer and sound artist born in Mexico City in 1956. He resides now in Germany. His actual work is a mixture of written music, gesture manipulation, sensoristics and nature, improvisation, live-electronics and dialectics of symbols.

[edit] Biography
Sandoval studied composition at the National School of Music, in Mexico. In 1980 he moved to Vienna and studied and worked as a piano builder at the Bösendorfer house. 1985-1990: Studied theory, analysis and composition with Julio Estrada and began the construction of simple automated mechanical percussion instruments, to generate random rhythmic chains. 1990-1994: Worked for Conlon Nancarrow as his assistant. 1995: Finished his own, custom-made computer-controlled acoustic piano, which was developed in collaboration with Trimpin. 1996-99:, In order to input information into this piano, he worked in the Netherlands on a pair of sensored-gloves (STEIM). The MIDI piano is now history, but he is still using the sensored gloves to perform solos or with other musicians in live-electronics concerts. He works in sensoristics and nature and develops a non-human interface to create his music.

Theatrical resources regarding performance due the over-accentuation of body-musical expression. The use of the instruments as objects, not as symbols. The use of the instruments as an extension of the musicians, both in physiological, organological and psychological terms at the same level, as if the instruments were living organisms and the musicians instruments. By extension of this: The creation of music using non-human grammar and syntaxes. (Due the transduction into music of real physical-evolutions in nature using sensor data-streams, not "ethno"-transcriptions). The use of dialectics of symbols due the creation of underlying instruments though objects or persons. The consideration of a "composition" as a never-finished process, never strictly "written", finished work. The composer does not exist any more as an "omniscient" personality. The musicians in musical and esthetical degradation due to extreme body manipulation.
