He is currently playing for the New Zealand Breakers of the Australian National Basketball League He starred in their first match of the season against the South Dragons top scoring with 34 points. Powell was easily the Breakers best player this season, he was the leading scorer in the entire league, averaging a massive 28.3ppg, was top 10 in the league in steals, and also won the slam-dunk competition at the All Star game. However, the Breakers were criticised for having a one-dimensional offense (pass it to Carlos) and failed to make the playoffs. He was offered the maximum allowed under the salary cap rules, but this was rejected by his agent as he will probably be playing in the NBA from now on.
