[edit] History
The "CSD Carlos A. Mannucci" was founded on November 16, 1959. Los Grifos or Griffins of Mannucci were born with the intention of increasing the practice of sport among Trujillians. There were several Trujillian's names that were very important for Trujillo, however finally the name of Carlos Alberto Mannucci Finochetti, who died in 1956, was chosen as the name for the club.
The Griffins started competing in the Trujillian league firstly with its volleyball and basketball teams. Both achieving great success in each of the tournaments they participated.
Mannucci started competing in football in 1963, and due to financial problems of the team of Mariscal Castilla, whose president decided to sell the category the best buyer and the President of Mannucci decided to buy..later on the name of Mariscal Castilla was changed and Mannucci started its adventure in the football world.
In 1967 Mannucci participated in the Trujillian league and eventually they won the league as well winning the right to participate in the Peruvian Cup and since that moment the city of Trujillo started to look the Griffins as their main representant; before that it was "The Red Devils" or Diablos Rojos (Alfonso Ugarte) from a near town call Chiclin that Trujillians felt identified with however from 1967 till now The City of Eternal Spring and squares has been identified with the blue, red and white colors of the CSD Mannucci whose popularity has reached other cities in La Libertad Region as well.
In April 1968 The Griffins (Mannucci) played the final of the Peruvian Cup in Lima City and they won it gaining the right to play in the Peruvian First Division in 1969.
Unfortunately for the Griffins the rules of relegation and promotion for the Peruvian Premier league stipulated that two teams would be relegated (one from Lima and one from elsewhere) so despite the fact that Mannucci ended the tournament in the 9th position out of 16 teams, they were relegated to the Second Division or Peruvian Cup. Howevever, Mannucci would win once again the Peruvian Cup the following year assuring its participation in the Peruvian premier League in 1970.
Mannucci was considereded a great team during the years of 1970 and 1971 with outstandings performances; but in 1972 without the financial support of the "Carlos A. Mannucci" firm , Mannucci was relegated to the Trujillian First Division.
In 1973, Mannucci was almost abandoned with no economical support but Mr. Alex Neciosup Alcantara decided to be in charge and then The Griffins (Mannucci) started again beating opponents and reaching the Finals of The Regional Stage againts U.T.C ,from Cajamarca City in the Cajamarca Region, and eventually winning the Regional Stage. In 1973 there was no Final for Peruvian Cup so the Winners of the Regional Stage will have direct access to the Peruvian Premier League. In consequence Mannucci again gained the right to participate in the mentioned Tournament realizing, once again, outstanding perfomances. Official Club Website
