[edit] Career

Vine received his first professional commission in 1977, for Sydney Dance Company project Tip. The score, 961 Ways to Nirvana, for amplified string quartet, orchestra and electronics, was never put to use. The following year he became resident composer for the company, scoring the first all-Australian full-length ballet, Poppy.

In 1984, after a couple of years lecturing in Electronic Music Composition at the Queensland Conservatorium, he became Musical Director of the Australia/New Zealand Choreographic School (Melbourne) and resident composer at the New South Wales State Conservatorium.

[edit] The last decade

Vine moved in 2000 to the position of Artistic Director at Musica Viva Australia.

2004 saw his Cello Concerto premiered by Steven Isserlis and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Jiri Belohlavek). The performance would win Best Performance of an Australian Composition at the 2005 Classical Music Awards.

In 2005 he was awarded the 2005 Don Banks Music Award, the highest available accolade the Australia Council for the Arts can confer on an artist. The award recognises artists who have made an outstanding and sustained contribution to Australian music.

As of 2006, Vine has seven concertos and six symphonies to his name. A seventh symphony has been planned, to be performed by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra on 1st & 2nd of December, 2006. However this performance has been postponed until further notice.

Vine's work has taken him to Finland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. He enjoys a longstanding recording relationship with ABC.
