Cardiff Urban Area

The Cardiff Urban Area is the name given to the urban area around Cardiff. The vast bulk of the population and area are contributed by Cardiff which had a population of 305,000 as recorded at the 2001 census and the rest was made up by the towns of Penarth and Dinas Powys connected to the south-east of the city along Cardiff Bay. The total official population of this urban area was given to be 327,706 in 2001. Growth since 2001 have increased this figure to give a 2005 estimate of 349,756.
However this figure excludes from the total the large town of Caerphilly to the north of the city, which has become part of the urban area more recently with new housing in the Thornhill and Llanishen areas of Cardiff. This would mean that the urban area is in reality around 350,000.

Separately there have also been calls to create a metropolitan area to include the city of Newport to the north-east of Cardiff, its adjoining urban area and valley towns in South East Wales into a new Cardiff Metropolitan Area or South East Wales Metro Area, with a much larger population of around 900,000 which would help to increase the profile of the areas outside of the Cardiff boundary and boost investment in more disadvantaged areas.[citation needed]
