Carbylamine reaction
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Carbylamine reaction is a chemical test for detection of primary amines.
Here ethyl amine is heated with alcoholic Potassium hydroxide and chloroform. This liberates the foul-smelling and toxic compound ethyl isocyanide.
Here when Aniline is heated with the same reactants, the foul-smelling and toxic compound Phenyl isocyanide is liberated.
The carbylamine test is not given by secondary and tertiary amines.
