[edit] Concept
Peter May :
I was listening Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band of the Beatles and I told to myself "Hey ! We could make a thing like this !" I've taken a pad and I wrote my ideas for a concept album. I thought that it could be a "collection" of songs about the life in a general way. I also noted that we could use the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Dan and I had wrote different songs when we were in concerts. We arranged them and reworked on. Then, we presented it to Mike and Keith, and they liked. Some songs have been writing during the recording, like Time is Passing, composed by Keith and me.
The concept consisted in a double concept album with songs chained together and with the theme of different aspects of life.
[edit] Instrumentation
Peter May had the idea to use the Montreal Symphonic Orchestra in some songs. Because of this, Performance features elaborate arrangements — for example, the brass ensemble on "He Lies and Dies" — and extensive use of studio effects including echo, reverberation, reverse tape and sound effects. Many of these effects were devised in collaboration with producer & engineer Robert "Robby" Piché, a friend of Peter's father. The four members of the band had assistants to help them for the elaboration of effects or sounds.
Some moments of discord came out during the recording sessions because Peter controlled all. After a little meeting with the three other members of the band, he decided to continue to control the album preparation, but with some participation of Dan and Keith. Mike told that he was « OK like this » and that he didn't want to control anything.
An example of the album's arrangements is Dan Gibson's song "If". On the demo[1], there was just two guitars — rhythm guitar and lead guitar — and Dan's voice. When Peter remade the demo, he added his voice (backing vocal) and some whistle. He also added a "bip" effect at the start of the song, but it was accidental. This effect has been dropped in the final production. For the album version, May's arrangements were including organ parts, bass drum and tambourine. Keith Young also made harmony vocals on the track.
A song, by Peter May, featured a choir and strings, without any involvement of the four band members, but it was abandoned. Another track, featuring Mike Jones on drums, was 8 minute-length, but was abandoned too because she was too longer to feature beside the other tracks of the album.
Dan Gibson had an idea : in the first part of the song "In the Life of...", he used a TV antenna for his chords and slides ! He will repeat the experience in other albums after. Peter May also used harmonies with his bass guitar on many of the songs.
[edit] Structure
The album has a "bookend effect", an idea from Peter May. The album starts with "Performance" and ends with the reprise, "Performance (Reprise)".
The unification of songs together as if it was just one song is pushed to extreme in this album. At the end of the album, the song ends, and a melody is heard. At the start of the album, the same melody is heard.

The song was a 8 minute-length drums improvisation performed by Mike Jones. The song has been recorded and arranged, but rejected in the mixing because she was too long.

[edit] "Orchestra Chatter"
Peter May wanted to feature a track where Kent Nagano, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra's conductor, would compose, or the orchestra should improvise. The song has never been recorded, and never written, because the other band members didn't want a song where they wouldn't play.
