[edit] Replaceable?

What was the rationale for considering this image replaceable? This animal has been photographed on exactly one occasion (to anyone's knowledge) and this image is one of that series of photos. --Aranae 14:34, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

From Laotian rock rat: "Return trips to Laos by Wildlife Conservation Society researchers have uncovered several other specimens. These new discoveries have prompted the suggestion that the animals may not be as rare as once thought." If the animal isn't rare, it should be possible for a free photograph to be made of it. —Angr 14:48, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
The statement is not meant to imply that the species is not rare. The sentence pertains to the subtle difference between "exceedingly rare" versus "very rare". All specimens referred to in this sentence were carcasses sold as meat.
  1. There has been one living animal ever observed by researchers.
  2. There has been a single series of photographs taken by one photographer of this one animal on one occasion. It was then released.
  3. Future replacement of this image will only be possible by experts and with the aid of specialized equipment.
There are no specific guidelines for animals, but I don't see how the replaceable image criteria have not been met. --Aranae 19:14, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

At this time, I suspect the image is not replaceable due to the nature of the animal. This may change in the future, however. – Quadell (talk) (random) 20:57, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable?

The animal thought to be extincted was photographed by a professor and giving to the press to be release to the public. At the time it was only a handful of pictures taken from the professor. I uploaded the image as it was a extraordinary event. alfiboy 06:44, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

If the professor is the original source of the image (not the photographer), has anyone considered emailing him/her and asking him/her to release a photo under the GFDL? BigDT 13:45, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
