Captain Paul Montford

Capt. Montford is a fictional character who appears in the 1941 Universal film The Wolf Man. He was played by Ralph Bellamy.
Montford was chief constable in the town of Llanwelly and a close family friend of Larry Talbot's. When Jenny Williams and Bela the gypsy were found dead in the woods, with Talbot's silver-headed cane nearby, Montford came to suspect his old friend, not believing his wild story about a wolf biting him.
He sided with Sir John Talbot's theory that there had been a wolf, but Larry got confused and killed Bela by accident, which meant he and his assistant, Victor Twiddle, had a wild animal on their hands. He discovered a wolf's footprints around the body of a third victim, Richardson. Along with Frank Andrews and Dr. Lloyd, Paul and Twiddle set about hunting for the wolf, and even when Sir John claimed to have killed a werewolf that was attacking Gwen Conliffe only to have it change back into his own son, Paul made up his own mind: that an ordinary wolf had tried to attack Gwen, and Larry had given his life in saving her.
Four years later, in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, Montford would no longer be the chief of police, and it can therefore be readily assumed that he retired sometime between Larry's "death" and subsequent resurrection four years later.
