Captain Jack (song)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Captain Jack" is a song by Billy Joel, featured on his 1973 album Piano Man. The song also features on many of his greatest hits albums, despite not being commercially successful.

Captain Jack was apparently a drug dealer living near Joel in New York, hence the lyrics "Captain Jack will get you high tonight..." However, Joel himself claims that this is in fact an anti-drugs song, and reflects the user becoming apathetic and lifeless.

One source cites that Captain Jack was the surname of a retired fisherman who would sell drugs out of a garbage truck in the Long Island area when Joel was growing up.

The "just a little push and you'll be smiling" lyric may refer to a needle pushing into a vein, hence the dealing and usage of heroin.
