Capt'n Nemo's
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Capt'n Nemo's is a submarine sandwich and soup shop in Chicago. Established in 1971 in the neighborhood of Rogers Park, Capt'n Nemo's has expanded to one other Chicago location and several others in Chicagoland. Capt'n Nemo's soup (purportedly made by "Mrs. Nemo") has won acclaim in area publications as for its quality and is even distributed in some area Jewel grocery stores. Several sandwiches, such as the Americanne, have been on Capt'n Nemo's menu since the stores opening. Most sandwiches are made with "Captain's Secret Sauce", a secret mix of oils, vinegars, and spices. Capt'n Nemo's sandwiches are made on bread from the Gonella Baking Co. and stretch from traditional submarine sandwiches such as Turkey Breast and Cheese to ones that cater to certain tastes, such as the Conqueror, which contains (in addition to the standard lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and Captain's Secret Sauce) eggs, sauerkraut, liverwurst, muenster cheese and salami.
It's relevance to local history rests with the baby-boomers who grew up in Rogers Park. Near Potowatomie Park, teenagers who participated in Park District activities0 frequented the location and helped the Capt'n Nemo's gain cult-like status in the neighborhood. The "Captain" offered free tastes of soup while customers waited in line. Students from Evanston High School, Sullivan High School, Saint Scholastica, St. Jerome's, Gale Junior High and Senn High School would come during lunch and subsequently bring their children many years later.
