Capelo

Capelo is a parish in the district of Horta in the Azores. The population in 2001 is 493, its density is 19/km² and the area is 25.93 km². The mountains cover much of Capelo, farmlands dominate the rest of Capelo. Capelo is located 20 km from Horta. Capelo includes the subdivisions of Arreiro, Ribeira do Cabo, Norte Pequeno and Varadouro. The village was founded in 1600. The population once had about 1,400 inhabitants. The town was destroved in 1672 and 1673 from a volcanic eruption from Cabeço de Fogo and again in 1957 and 1958 from Capelinhos.
